Maharashtra Rain Update: Heavy Showers Return to Ghat Regions as Low-Pressure System Intensifies
IMD warns of widespread rainfall across Maharashtra over the next 48 hours; Tamhini records 200 mm of rain, with heavy to very heavy showers likely in Konkan and Ghat areas.

Pune: Rainfall activity has intensified once again across the Western Ghats and several parts of Maharashtra as a low-pressure system strengthens weather conditions over the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an increase in rainfall intensity over the next 48 hours, particularly in the Konkan region, Ghat areas, and parts of central Maharashtra.

According to data released by the IMD Pune Observatory, Tamhini recorded the highest rainfall of 200 mm during the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 18.
Other major rainfall figures include:
- Bhira: 198 mm
- Shirgaon: 170 mm
- Dawadi: 144 mm
- Dungarwadi: 139 mm
- Bhivpuri: 129 mm
- Ambone: 57 mm
- Vangaon: 35 mm
- Lonavala: 32 mm
- Mulshi: 31 mm
The increased rainfall has already led to a rise in water levels in streams and rivers, and inflows into major reservoirs are expected to improve significantly in the coming days.
Senior meteorologist Anupam Kashyapi said that a low-pressure area formed over Jharkhand and northern Odisha is moving in a northwesterly direction, increasing moisture availability across Maharashtra and creating favourable conditions for widespread rainfall.
The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Konkan, the Ghat regions, Pune, Satara, Kolhapur, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. Meanwhile, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada are likely to witness moderate to heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms, while Vidarbha may experience rain along with lightning activity in isolated areas.
Residents in vulnerable regions have been advised to remain alert, as intense rainfall could lead to waterlogging, rising river levels, and localized flooding.
