BJP finalises Council candidates in Delhi meet

Mumbai: Maharashtra BJP State President Ravindra Chavan is set to visit New Delhi today (April 27) to finalize the party’s candidates for the upcoming Legislative Council nominations. The final decision is expected after consultations with BJP National President Nitin Nabin.
The BJP is expected to nominate five candidates to the Council. Initially, the party had shortlisted 15 names, which later expanded by adding 11 more contenders. The selection strategy this time emphasizes regional representation and giving opportunities to dedicated organizational workers. The party is also looking to promote experienced yet relatively young leaders who can contribute actively for at least the next 15 years.
Former Congress leader Pragya Satav, who recently joined the BJP, is almost certain to secure a nomination. However, discussions for the remaining seats are still ongoing. Given the BJP’s recent trend of surprise decisions, no potential candidate is assured of selection, making merit a key factor in the final choices.

Meanwhile, political developments continue across other parties. In the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), questions remain over the possible merger of Prahar Janshakti Party led by Bachchu Kadu, though his stance is yet to be clarified. Senior leader Neelam Gorhe is almost certain to be nominated and, if selected, could become the longest-serving member in the Council due to her extensive experience.
Within the Nationalist Congress Party led by Ajit Pawar, there is still no consensus on candidates. It is believed that the final decision will rest with Sunetra Pawar. Names such as Avdhut Tatkare, Rajendra Jain, Umesh Patil, and Suraj Chavan are currently under discussion.
On the opposition front, the Maha Vikas Aghadi is yet to finalize its sole candidate. If Uddhav Thackeray decides to contest, the election could be uncontested. However, if he opts out, alliance partners—including the Indian National Congress—may push forward their own candidates, potentially leading to a contest.
