Dr. Srishti Baviskar was allegedly assaulted at Shastri Nagar Hospital in Dombivli, run by the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC). Following the High Court’s decision, Dr. Mahendra Baviskar spoke to the media for the first time and said that the court’s decision has provided relief to citizens who believe in the legal system.
He said attacks on doctors cannot be justified under any circumstances and stressed that strict action against those who assault medical professionals is necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Doctor Attacks Are An Attack on Healthcare System
Dr. Mahendra Baviskar said doctors are an essential part of society and provide treatment to every patient with the same dedication, regardless of whether the patient is rich or poor.
According to him, an attack on a doctor is not merely violence against an individual but an attack on the entire healthcare system. He emphasized that the government, administration and society must collectively take responsibility for ensuring that such incidents do not happen again.
Doctors can provide services fearlessly only when hospitals offer them a safe and secure working environment, he said.
Dr. Baviskar also thanked the police for intervening in time and providing the necessary protection in the case.
Stronger Security Needed in Government Hospitals
Dr. Mahendra Baviskar called for more effective security arrangements for doctors and medical staff working in government hospitals.
He said strict legal action against individuals who attack doctors would help reduce such incidents. He also emphasized the need for better security systems so that doctors and healthcare workers can perform their duties without fear.
Recruit More Doctors and Improve Hospital Facilities
Dr. Baviskar also urged authorities and public representatives to focus on improving healthcare infrastructure instead of putting pressure on doctors.
He highlighted the shortage of doctors, inadequate facilities and increasing patient load in KDMC-run hospitals as major concerns.
He said that recruiting more doctors, providing modern medical facilities and ensuring adequate manpower could reduce the need for ordinary patients to depend on private hospitals.
According to him, elected representatives must make strengthening the public healthcare system a priority.
No Contact From Ramesh Mhatre or Family
Dr. Mahendra Baviskar said that neither accused Ramesh Mhatre nor his family members had contacted them following the alleged assault.
He also welcomed the conditions imposed by the Bombay High Court while granting bail to Mhatre.
Will Dr. Srishti Return to Shastri Nagar Hospital?
When asked whether Dr. Srishti Baviskar would return to Shastri Nagar Hospital, her father gave a cautious response.
He said the immediate priority is to restore a normal atmosphere in the hospital and ensure that doctors are provided with adequate security.
Dr. Baviskar said Dr. Srishti may return to medical service once the tension subsides, the situation becomes normal and the mental stress caused by the incident reduces. He added that it may take some time for her to recover from the entire episode.
However, her commitment to serving society as a doctor remains unchanged, he said.
Dr. Mahendra Baviskar also appealed to the government, administration, elected representatives and citizens to work together to prevent attacks on doctors and ensure a safe environment for healthcare professionals.
