Post SMS Fact Check: Beware of Fake India Post Messages About Parcel Delivery
PIB Fact Check Confirms – The “Update Address in 24 Hours” SMS Is Fake
Scammers Target Consumers During Festive Season
As the festive season begins, many people in India send and receive parcels through India Post — gifts, sweets, and festive items. Taking advantage of this busy time, fraudsters are sending fake SMS messages pretending to be from India Post.
What Does the Fake SMS Say?
The fraudulent message claims:
“Your parcel has arrived at the warehouse. Please update your address within 24 (or 48) hours or it will be returned. Click the link below to update your address.”
The message even includes the India Post name at the top, making it appear authentic. However, the link provided is malicious — designed to steal personal data or banking information once you click it.
PIB Fact Check’s Clarification
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check team investigated this viral SMS and declared it FAKE.
Through its official handle @PIBFactCheck, PIB posted a warning on X (formerly Twitter) stating:
“Have you received an SMS claiming your parcel is at the warehouse and asking you to update your address within 24 hours? Beware! This SMS is FAKE. India Post never sends messages asking customers to update their address via any link. Do not click such fraudulent links.”
They also shared a screenshot of the fake SMS to alert the public.
India Post Never Asks for Address Updates via SMS Links
India Post has repeatedly warned that it does not send messages asking for address verification or payment updates through links.
Customers are advised to ignore such messages, avoid clicking links, and report suspicious SMS to the authorities or to cybercrime.gov.in.
Stay Alert, Stay Safe
If you receive such a message:
-
Do not click on the link.
-
Do not share personal or banking information.
-
Verify parcel status only through official India Post websites or post offices.
