Nagpur, India: Droupadi Murmu emphasized that strict enforcement of rules must go hand in hand with building stronger public trust in governance, while addressing officers at the 78th batch convocation ceremony of the National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT) in Nagpur.

Highlighting the core values of public service, the President stated that humility, patience, and sensitivity are essential components of an ideal administrative approach. She noted that the responsibility of an officer extends beyond enforcing regulations to ensuring that citizens have confidence in the system. Decisions rooted in justice, transparency, and integrity, she said, play a crucial role in strengthening governance and contributing to the nation’s holistic development.

Addressing future challenges, President Murmu pointed out that officers will need to navigate complexities such as the digital economy, international financial transactions, and evolving methods of tax evasion. She stressed the importance of leveraging modern technologies like data analytics and artificial intelligence to enhance administrative efficiency, while cautioning that technology remains only a tool. “Your true identity lies in your judgment, integrity, and ethical outlook,” she remarked.

Speaking on the evolving tax landscape, she noted the steady rise in direct tax collection and improved compliance across the country, which reflects growing trust between citizens and the administration. Referring to the Income Tax Act, 2025, effective from April 1, 2026, she said the legislation marks a step toward a more modern, simplified, and transparent tax system. She urged the officers to play a leading role in its effective implementation.

Among those present at the ceremony were Jishnu Dev Varma, Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Ravi Agrawal, C. B. Chen K. Mathew, and Pankaj Kumar Mishra, along with other dignitaries.

Governor Jishnu Dev Varma highlighted the encouraging rise in the number of women officers in the Indian Revenue Service, calling it a positive sign for inclusive growth. He urged the new officers to make meaningful contributions to nation-building at a time when India is emerging as a global leader.

State Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule underscored the importance of prioritizing public interest while making administrative decisions. Referring to the vision of Narendra Modi for a “Developed India,” he said that the role of the Indian Revenue Service and its officers is pivotal in strengthening the country’s economic foundation.
