Centre Issues Notice to Elon Musk’s ‘X’; Orders Removal of Obscene Content, Seeks Report Within 72 Hours

New Delhi:
The Central Government of India has issued a strict notice to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), directing it to immediately remove obscene content generated through its AI chatbot Grok. The government has asked the company to submit a detailed compliance report within 72 hours.
In recent days, there has been a growing misuse of Grok, the generative AI chatbot on X, with users allegedly generating sexually explicit and objectionable content. This trend has raised serious concerns for the government. As a result, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has taken a firm stand and ordered X to conduct an immediate review of its Grok AI system.
The government has also instructed that any corrective action or internal review conducted by the platform must be reported within 72 hours.
According to officials, several X users were uploading photos and instructing the chatbot to digitally alter women’s images by removing clothing and portraying them in an explicit manner. In many cases, Grok allegedly generated such modified images without consent, amounting to violations of Indian laws as well as X’s own platform policies.
In view of the increasing misuse and concerns related to women’s safety and dignity, the government has warned that failure to comply with these directives could invite strict legal action against the platform.
Notably, in the last week of 2025, MeitY had issued a fresh advisory to all social media platforms, instructing them to strictly comply with their legal obligations to remove obscene, adult, or illegal content. The advisory clearly stated that non-compliance would lead to stringent action.
