According to the UAE Ministry of Defence, the two oil tankers, Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, were travelling along the southern shipping route in the Strait of Hormuz when they were struck by missiles. The deceased Indian sailor was serving aboard the Mombasa tanker.
The attack caused a fire on one of the vessels and significant damage to the ships. Emergency crews managed to bring the blaze under control, while the injured crew members were provided with medical treatment.
The UAE strongly condemned the attack, holding Iran responsible and describing the incident as a violation of international law and maritime security. The ministry stated that the country reserves the right to take appropriate measures to protect its sovereignty, ensure the safety of international shipping, and maintain regional stability.
The incident comes amid renewed tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, raising concerns over the security of one of the world’s busiest energy corridors. Nearly 20% of global oil and gas supplies pass through the Strait of Hormuz, making any disruption a major concern for international energy markets.
In a separate incident, a commercial vessel sailing about 40 nautical miles northeast of Khasab Port in Oman was struck by an unidentified object, causing minor engine damage. No injuries were reported, and authorities are investigating whether the incident is connected to the attack on the UAE tankers.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump announced renewed maritime restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, stating that additional security measures would be introduced for vessels linked to Iran.
