Indian Railways Hikes Fines for Rule Violations

Millions of railway passengers across India will now have to be more cautious while travelling, as Indian Railways has increased penalties for several rule violations. The revised fine structure came into effect on June 20, 2026, with authorities aiming to strengthen passenger safety, maintain discipline, and reduce inconvenience caused by irresponsible behaviour.

According to railway officials, incidents such as travelling without a valid ticket, unauthorized entry into reserved coaches, smoking inside railway premises, creating nuisance under the influence of alcohol, and obstructing railway staff have been increasing. To curb these violations, stricter penalties have now been introduced.

Railway authorities have also urged passengers to cooperate with Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) during inspections and ensure they carry valid tickets while travelling.

Revised Railway Fine List

Travelling without a ticket – Fine up to ₹500, along with payment of the applicable fare.

Travelling on someone else’s ticket – ₹500 fine.

Unauthorized hawking or selling goods – ₹2,000 fine.

Creating nuisance while intoxicated – ₹1,000 fine.

Using abusive or obscene language – ₹1,000 fine.

Obstructing railway employees from performing official duties – Fine up to ₹2,500.

Trespassing on railway tracks or restricted areas – ₹500 fine.

Refusing to vacate a reserved coach without authorization – ₹2,000 fine.

Ignoring official instructions issued by railway staff – ₹500 fine.

Male passengers travelling in ladies’ coaches without permission – Fine up to ₹2,500.

Providing false information about transported goods – ₹500 per quintal.

Carrying dangerous or prohibited items such as explosives or flammable materials – Fine up to ₹10,000, along with possible legal action in serious cases.

Damaging public property, signboards, or railway infrastructure – ₹2,000 fine.

Smoking inside railway stations, platforms, or train coaches – ₹2,000 fine.

Railway Appeals to Passengers

Railway authorities have advised passengers to purchase valid tickets before travelling, strictly follow railway regulations, and fully cooperate with TTEs and RPF personnel during inspections. Officials said following the rules will help passengers avoid unnecessary penalties, legal action, and travel disruptions.

The Railways clarified that the revised penalties are not intended to increase revenue, but to improve passenger safety, maintain discipline, and ensure a safer and more comfortable travel experience for everyone.
