At least seven devotees have died, while dozens of others were injured.
Rumour of Electric Current in Fallen Pole Sparks Panic
Around 50,000 devotees were reportedly present at the temple on the occasion of Shravan Monday. A power pole had fallen on the road connecting Ashok Dham railway station to the temple during the night. A rumour spread among the crowd that the fallen pole was carrying live electric current.
The rumour triggered panic among the devotees, causing people to rush towards safety. The sudden movement of the massive crowd led to a stampede, in which several people were trampled.
Injured Undergoing Treatment at Lakhisarai Hospital
Most of the injured are reportedly women, and the condition of some is said to be critical. The injured were immediately taken to the government hospital in Lakhisarai for treatment.
After receiving information about the incident, teams from the district administration, police and health department reached the spot. Rescue and relief operations are underway on a war footing.
Notably, a similar stampede had occurred at the same temple during the Shravan festival in 2019, in which one person had died.
