Given the mounting pressure on the Moshi waste depot, future risks, and the city’s growing population, the administration is focusing on decentralizing waste management. To this end, a preliminary assessment of government-owned, reserved, and municipal-owned lands in various areas has been carried out.
According to the administration’s survey, sites being considered for Odor-free waste processing center include Talwade; Mhetre Udyan; Thackeray Udyan in Yamunanagar; the Nehru Nagar bus depot or hockey ground; the proposed waste collection center in Kiwale; Defense-owned land in the Pimpri-Waghere area; reserved plots in Wakad and Pimple Nilakh; land adjacent to the STP project in Kasarwadi; and the Animal Husbandry Center site in Tathawade.
Notably, no final decision has been reached regarding these sites yet; further action will be taken based on the preliminary survey and feasibility reports. Sources indicated that a thorough study regarding objections from local residents, environmental impacts, traffic logistics, and legal aspects will also be conducted.
The issue of the city’s waste management has once again come to the forefront following the Moshi incident. Senior administrative officials have expressed the view that relying on a single location to dispose of the thousands of metric tons of waste generated daily could prove risky.
Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vijay Suryawanshi had previously indicated plans to implement long-term, sustainable waste management measures. Accordingly, proposals are emerging for the establishment of small, decentralized processing centers, biogas plants, waste-to-energy initiatives, and alternative depot sites across the city.
Meanwhile, surveys of the proposed sites have sparked both curiosity and concern among local residents. An official announcement from the administration regarding whether Odor-free waste processing center will actually be constructed at these locations is still awaited.
Potential Odor-free waste processing center sites:
1. Talwade
2. Mhetre Udyan (Park)
3. Thackeray Udyan, Yamunanagar
4. Nehrunagar Bus Depot / Hockey Ground
5. Proposed waste collection center at Kiwale
6. Defence land in the Pimpri-Waghere area
7. Wakad – Municipal reserved land
8. Reserved plot at Pimple Nilakh
9. Land near the STP project at Kasarwadi
10. Animal husbandry center land at Tathawade
11. (Another potential site from the administration’s survey)
The Moshi incident has taught the city a significant lesson. Waste management is not solely the administration’s responsibility; it is a collective responsibility of the entire city. When deciding on Odor-free waste processing centers, top priority must be given to local resident participation, environmental impact, and scientific planning. After all, shifting a problem from one area to another is not a solution; establishing a sustainable and safe waste management system for the entire city is the need of the hour.
