India Hold Edge Against England in T20 World Cup Semi-Final: Dilip Vengsarkar
Former India Captain Backs Hosts Ahead of Crucial Clash at Wankhede

Mumbai | Sports Correspondent: India will face England in the semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar believes the hosts have a slight edge going into the high-stakes encounter.
India have won all their matches in the tournament except for a loss against South Africa, while England have also delivered consistent performances. Vengsarkar expects a closely contested match between the two strong sides.
Powerplay Performance Will Be Crucial
Speaking about the key factor in T20 cricket, Vengsarkar emphasized the importance of the first six overs.
“In the T20 format, the Powerplay sets the foundation. If a team scores 60–70 runs in the first six overs, building a big total becomes easier. However, losing wickets early and being restricted to 25–30 runs can create pressure. Indian batters must balance aggression with composure,” he said.
Shot Selection More Important Than Blind Aggression
Vengsarkar pointed out that smart shot selection is more valuable than reckless hitting. Referring to India’s previous match against West Indies, he praised Sanju Samson for his composed innings.
“Samson showed that with proper shot selection and wickets in hand, crossing the 200-run mark is achievable. India’s strength lies in accelerating during the final three to four overs and putting the opposition under pressure,” he added.
Middle Overs Control Key for Bowlers
He also highlighted the responsibility on Indian bowlers, especially during the middle overs.
“Maintaining tight lines and controlling the run rate will be vital. England have aggressive batters who can change the game quickly. If someone like Kuldeep Yadav plays in the final XI, he could trouble England. However, major changes in the playing combination seem unlikely,” Vengsarkar noted.
England’s Batting Line-Up Dangerous
Vengsarkar warned against underestimating England’s balanced and powerful batting unit.
“They have a good mix of experienced and young players. A batter like Harry Brook can turn the match around in a few overs. India must stay focused and not take England lightly,” he concluded.
