Delhi High Court Expresses Concern Over Sonam Wangchuk’s 19-Day Hunger Strike, Directs Government to Ensure Medical Care
The High Court orders regular medical monitoring of social activist Sonam Wangchuk, stressing that every citizen's life is valuable as his indefinite hunger strike enters its 19th day.

The Delhi High Court has expressed serious concern over the health of social activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar for the past 19 days. Hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking protection for Wangchuk’s health and safety, the court directed the Central Government to ensure his regular medical examination and appropriate healthcare.

During the hearing, the court observed that Wangchuk’s prolonged fast required continuous medical monitoring and emphasized that timely intervention would be essential if his health deteriorated.
The Solicitor General of India agreed with the court’s observations, stating that every citizen’s life is important and assuring the bench that the government would provide all necessary medical assistance based on the advice of doctors.
The PIL highlighted concerns over Wangchuk’s reportedly declining health due to the prolonged hunger strike. In response, the Central Government informed the court that government doctors and medical specialists have been closely monitoring his condition and would take all necessary medical measures as and when required.
Taking note of the government’s assurance, the Delhi High Court expressed satisfaction and directed authorities to continue regular medical supervision. The court further instructed that any treatment or medical intervention recommended by doctors should be carried out promptly in the interest of Wangchuk’s health and safety.
The court subsequently disposed of the petition after recording the government’s commitment to ensure continuous medical care.
Sonam Wangchuk’s indefinite hunger strike has drawn nationwide attention, with growing concern over his health and widespread discussions surrounding the issues he has raised through his protest.
