Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, Farm Loan Waiver — Will the Opposition Corner the Government? What Other Issues Could Trouble the Mahayuti Alliance?

Maharashtra Assembly Monsoon Session 2025
The monsoon session of the Maharashtra Legislature begins today and will run until 18th July, spanning three weeks. In this session, the opposition parties are gearing up to corner the government on several critical issues, especially over the “Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana” (Chief Minister’s Dear Sister Scheme).
The government had promised ₹2,100 under this scheme before the elections, but implementation is still pending. The opposition is expected to raise this issue aggressively in the assembly.
Session Begins Amid Reversal of Hindi Language Mandate
Although the state government has rolled back its controversial decision to enforce Hindi, the opposition is not letting up. In protest, they have boycotted the traditional tea meet with the government and are preparing to attack on multiple fronts, including:
-
Farm loan waiver
-
Shaktipeeth Expressway
-
Dear Sister Scheme
-
Minimum support prices (MSP) for crops
-
Rising inflation
-
Unemployment
-
Corruption
🚧 Shaktipeeth Expressway Controversy
The government has approved the Nagpur-Goa Expressway, named the Shaktipeeth Expressway, spanning 802 km. However, strong opposition has emerged from Kolhapur district — including local ministers, MLAs, and farmers — who are unhappy with the proposed route through their region. Ignoring this opposition, the government is pushing forward with the project. The matter is likely to be debated in the assembly, with even ruling party MLAs possibly questioning the move.
👩👧 ‘Majhi Ladki Bahin’ Scheme Under Fire
The Dear Sister Scheme, intended to provide ₹2,100 per month to women, is now facing intense scrutiny. Not only has the implementation not begun, but the government is reportedly using funds from the Social Justice and Tribal Development Departments to cover costs — a move that may trigger a fierce backlash from the opposition.
🌾 Farm Loan Waiver to Be a Flashpoint
The Mahayuti alliance had promised a farm loan waiver in its election manifesto, but no action has been taken so far. The opposition is expected to keep this issue alive throughout the session.
Meanwhile, controversy erupted during the Estimates Committee’s visit to Dhule, led by Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) MLA Arjun Khotkar. A large sum of unaccounted cash was reportedly found at a government guest house during the visit. Though the police are investigating, the incident has raised doubts over the credibility of legislative committees, giving the opposition another opportunity to attack the government.
⚠️ Key Issues the Opposition Will Raise:
-
Suicide of Vaishnavi Hagavane in Pune due to dowry harassment
-
Impact of heavy rains in May-June on daily life in Mumbai and Pune
-
Collapse of a bridge on Indrayani River near Talegaon, resulting in tourist deaths
-
Chaos in the Class 11 online admission process
-
Disproportionate assets owned by the driver of Minister Sandipan Bhumre
This monsoon session is expected to be stormy, with the opposition targeting the government on both governance failures and unfulfilled promises.
