Pune: Traffic movement between Pune, Chakan, Talegaon and Nashik is set to become smoother as the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has accelerated plans to develop alternative bypass roads and improve major district roads in the region.

The move is aimed at addressing the persistent traffic congestion in the rapidly expanding Chakan and Talegaon industrial belts, where a large volume of heavy commercial and industrial traffic moves every day. PMRDA has proposed four alternative bypass roads along the Pune-Nashik corridor, while land acquisition for the projects has already been initiated.
As part of the proposed eastern bypass network for Chakan and Talegaon, four important connecting roads will be developed. The projects are expected to provide alternative routes for vehicles travelling between the industrial areas and Pune-Nashik Highway, reducing pressure on major junctions.
900-Metre Road to Connect Hingane Chowk with Chakan MIDC
A 900-metre-long and 30-metre-wide road will be constructed from Hingane Chowk on the Talegaon-Chakan Highway to Kharabwadi in Chakan Industrial Area Phase 3.
The road will also provide connectivity towards the Volkswagen plant. Once completed, traffic from Talegaon and Chakan MIDC Phases 2 and 3 travelling towards Pune and Nashik will get a direct connection to the Pune-Nashik Highway.
Officials expect the new route to significantly reduce congestion around Talegaon Chowk and Chakan.
1.2-Km Road to Ease Chakan Chowk Traffic
Another road measuring 1.2 km in length and 15 metres in width will connect SANY company in Nanekarwadi with the Samruddhi CNG pump.
The proposed road will connect Chakan MIDC Phases 2 and 3 with the Pune-Nashik Highway. The alternative route is expected to reduce the burden on Chakan Chowk, one of the major congestion points in the industrial belt.
2.5-Km Road from Medankarwadi to Rase Phata
PMRDA has also proposed a 2.5-km-long and 35-metre-wide road from Bangla Vasti Chowk in Medankarwadi to Rase Phata.
The road will provide connectivity from Pune, Talegaon and Chakan MIDC Phases 2 and 3 to the Shikrapur State Highway at Rase Phata through the Pune-Nashik Highway corridor.
This route is expected to offer an additional alternative for vehicles moving between the industrial areas and the surrounding highway network.
850-Metre Western Bypass Connectivity
Under the proposed western bypass route, an 850-metre-long and 45-metre-wide road will connect the Pune-Nashik Highway with Chakan MIDC Phase 5.
The road is expected to facilitate faster movement of heavy vehicles around Chakan Chowk and Ambethan Chowk, potentially reducing congestion caused by industrial traffic.
Development of Major District Roads
Along with the bypass projects, PMRDA is also undertaking development and improvement of several major district roads in the region.
- Chikhali to Moi – 1.65 km
- Kuruli Phata to Nighoje – 2.5 km
- Alandi Phata (Chakan) to Alandi Road – 4 km
- Charholi Khurd to Alandi-Markal – 2 km
- Nighoje to Chakan MIDC – 1.25 km
- Khalumbre to Chakan MIDC Phase 2 – 1.75 km
These road improvement projects are expected to strengthen connectivity between villages, industrial areas and major highways in the Pune Metropolitan Region.
₹100 Crore Allocated for Road Development
PMRDA has allocated ₹100 crore for the development of major district roads aimed at improving traffic movement in the Chakan and Talegaon industrial areas. The works are currently progressing.
At the same time, land acquisition for the four proposed bypass roads is underway. Once these projects are completed, industrial vehicles will have additional routes to access the Pune-Nashik Highway and other major roads, which could substantially ease congestion at key junctions.
Shivkumar Kupal, Executive Engineer, Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority, said the road development projects and proposed bypasses are being undertaken to improve traffic movement in the Chakan and Talegaon industrial areas.
