Threat of Unseasonal Rain Looms Over Gudi Padwa; Yellow and Orange Alerts Issued Across the State

Pune | Gudi Padwa—traditionally regarded as the beginning of the Marathi New Year—shows signs of being celebrated this year amidst spells of unseasonal rain. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding unseasonal rainfall across nearly all districts of the state, with ‘Yellow’ and ‘Orange’ alerts being issued for several locations.

Over the past few days, the state’s weather has witnessed significant fluctuations. Since mid-February, temperatures had risen rapidly, with maximum temperatures in some regions nearing the 40°C mark. A heatwave warning had been issued as early as the beginning of March. However, the weather has now undergone a sudden shift, bringing with it unseasonal rainfall.

According to the Meteorological Department’s forecast, there is a possibility of heavy rainfall in several parts of the state on Thursday (March 20). A ‘Yellow’ alert has been issued for 21 districts across the state, while an ‘Orange’ alert has been issued for 7 districts.

In parts of North Konkan, there is a possibility of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. Wind speeds could reach up to 40 to 50 kilometers per hour. The Meteorological Department has also predicted the possibility of hailstorms in isolated pockets within the South Konkan and Goa regions.

‘Yellow’ alerts have been issued for numerous districts, including Ratnagiri, Dhule, Nandurbar, Pune, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Latur, Nagpur, and Amravati. Meanwhile, ‘Orange’ alerts have been issued for the districts of Jalgaon, Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Parbhani, and Beed.

Regions across Konkan, Central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha also face the possibility of stormy rainfall accompanied by lightning, with strong winds expected in some areas.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has forecast that the skies over Mumbai city and its suburbs are likely to remain predominantly clear, with maximum temperatures hovering around 32°C and minimum temperatures around 22°C.
