Pune Ring Road Eastern Extension Approved; ₹10,502 Crore Project Cleared
39.605-km access-controlled corridor; project targeted for completion by 2029

Pune | The Maharashtra government has approved the eastern extension of the Pune Ring Road, a major project aimed at easing the city’s growing traffic congestion. With approval granted for the revised project cost of approximately ₹10,502 crore, work on the ambitious project is expected to gain momentum.
The project is being implemented by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The primary objective of the ring road is to divert traffic outside Pune city and reduce congestion on major roads within the city.
The eastern extension includes a 39.605-km access-controlled expressway between Soratapwadi (Valti) on the Pune-Solapur Road and Varve (B.) (Shirve) on the Pune-Satara Road. The corridor is expected to provide major relief to traffic movement in the eastern and southern parts of Pune.
Inter-State and Inter-City Traffic to Be Diverted Outside the City
A significant volume of inter-state and inter-city traffic currently passes through Pune city, putting additional pressure on major roads. The ring road will provide an alternative route around the city, reducing the need for vehicles travelling between different parts of Pune to pass through the central areas.
This is expected to reduce traffic congestion at major junctions, highways and internal roads. The project is also considered important in view of rapid urbanisation in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
Around 4.49 Lakh Commuters Expected Daily by 2031
The relevant section of the ring road is approximately 25.03 km long, and an estimated 4.49 lakh commuters are expected to use the route daily by 2031.
Considering the rising population, increasing number of vehicles and rapid industrial and residential development in the Pune Metropolitan Region, the road’s future traffic capacity is expected to play a crucial role.
168.881-Km Continuous Ring Road
The total length of the Pune Ring Road is 168.881 km. Once the connectivity of all sections is ensured, the project will provide an integrated access-controlled corridor around Pune.
Around 80 per cent of the land acquisition for the overall project has reportedly been completed. Planning is underway to complete the project within the निर्धारित timeline.
Once a major portion of the project is completed, it is expected to significantly change the pattern of traffic movement across Pune and the Pune Metropolitan Region.
Work to Be Accelerated in Two Phases
Following completion of land acquisition, various stages of construction will be expedited. The project is targeted for completion by 2029.
Administrative, technical and land-acquisition-related processes will be prioritised. Instead of diverting traffic in only one direction, the ring road will create an alternative transportation network around the city.
This will provide faster and safer connectivity for vehicles entering and leaving Pune.
Speed Limit of 120 Kmph; Modern Infrastructure Planned
The corridor is being designed on the lines of an access-controlled expressway, with a planned speed limit of 120 kmph. Modern engineering technologies and essential safety measures will be incorporated, with road safety given priority.
The project will include:
- 2 interchanges
- 3 major bridges
- 5 minor bridges
- 18 elevated corridors/flyovers
- 4 tunnels
These structures are expected to reduce conflicts between local traffic and high-speed traffic on the ring road.
Tree plantation along both sides of the road and landscaping near interchanges are also planned, with the aim of developing the corridor as modern and environmentally friendly infrastructure.
Major Relief Expected for Pune’s Traffic System
Rapid urbanisation, expansion of industrial areas, new residential projects, growth of the IT sector and the rising number of vehicles have led to persistent congestion on Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad’s major roads.
Against this backdrop, approval for the eastern extension of the Pune Ring Road is being considered significant. Once completed, a large portion of heavy and inter-city traffic passing through Pune can be diverted to the outer corridor.
This is expected to reduce travel time, save fuel, lower pollution and improve overall traffic efficiency.
With the revised ₹10,502-crore project receiving approval, the eastern extension of the Pune Ring Road is now set to gain decisive momentum and could become a major milestone in Pune’s future transportation infrastructure.
