Jamnagar, Gujarat: In a landmark move set to redefine wildlife conservation and veterinary education, Anant Ambani, Executive Director of Reliance Industries, has announced the establishment of the world’s first integrated global wildlife veterinary university under the banner of Vantara.

The upcoming Vantara University, to be set up in Jamnagar, will be a first-of-its-kind institution dedicated entirely to wildlife conservation, animal healthcare, and veterinary sciences. Envisioned as a modern-day “Gurukul,” the university aims to position India as a global leader in wildlife protection and veterinary research.

This pioneering institution will focus on advancing scientific research in animal welfare, strengthening wildlife conservation ecosystems, and producing world-class experts in veterinary medicine, wildlife biology, and conservation science. The curriculum will uniquely blend traditional Indian knowledge systems with modern scientific approaches, offering a holistic and future-ready education model.

Speaking on the vision, Anant Ambani emphasized that the future of animal care depends on how institutions are shaped with compassion, knowledge, and skill. The initiative stems from his personal experiences witnessing the challenges faced in wildlife care and the urgent need for specialized expertise in the field.

The foundation ceremony was conducted as per Hindu traditions, symbolizing India’s rich cultural and ecological heritage. Elements such as water, soil, and stones were sourced from diverse ecosystems across India—including forests, wetlands, grasslands, the Himalayas, and other biodiversity-rich regions—representing a unified national vision for conservation.

Vantara University will integrate multiple disciplines under one academic ecosystem, aligning its programs with global wildlife conservation frameworks. It will offer undergraduate, postgraduate, and specialized programs in areas such as:

  • Wildlife medicine and surgery
  • Animal nutrition
  • Ethology (animal behavior)
  • Genetics and epidemiology
  • Conservation policy and habitat restoration

The university will also introduce prestigious initiatives like the Vantara University Founding Fellows Program and the “Every Life Matters” Scholarship, aimed at nurturing talent from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.

Equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, international collaborations, and residential facilities, the institution will emphasize action-based research and hands-on training to tackle real-world conservation challenges.

Inspired by the values of the ancient Nalanda University and the Rigvedic principle “Aa No Bhadrah Kratavo Yantu Vishwatah” (Let noble thoughts come to us from all directions), the university seeks to build a new generation committed to protecting every living being.

More than just an academic institution, Vantara University is envisioned as a global knowledge hub for wildlife health, conservation innovation, and sustainable ecosystems, reinforcing India’s commitment to safeguarding biodiversity and shaping the future of animal welfare.
