The Indrayani River, worshipped by the Warkari community and emotionally connected with thousands of Pimpri-Chinchwad residents, is finally set for a major transformation. The long-awaited Indrayani River Improvement Project has moved forward, with the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation officially issuing the tender notice.

A promise now taking shape

BJP MLA Mahesh Landge had announced the ‘Namami Indrayani’ initiative under his Vision-2020 campaign. The project later became a prominent issue during the 2019 and 2024 assembly elections. For several years, the project was pending approvals from the State Environment Committee and the State Technical Committee.

Former Chief Minister Eknath Shinde played a key role in ensuring environmental clearance, while current Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expedited the technical approval process. After both approvals, PCMC tabled the project before the Estimates Committee which gave the green signal. Following this, the tender has now been published, marking a major leap forward.
In the first phase, work worth ₹526 crore is planned.

Environmental recommendations included

Environmental groups and nature conservation organisations actively participated while finalising the river development plan. As suggested in the municipal Master Plan, several components have been integrated:

  • 60 MLD Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) at multiple locations

  • Water ATMs

  • Public Toilets

  • Street Furniture

  • Chain-link fencing and compound walls

  • Biodiversity Parks

The entire project will be executed under the AMRUT-2 (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) scheme of the Central Government.

Reaction – MLA Mahesh Landge

“The Indrayani River is not just a matter of faith. It is the lifeline that connects our culture, environment, and public health. Now that the tender has been issued, I am confident that after the process is completed, work will begin by December 2025.

I thank Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the Mahayuti Government for their support. This project will give new life to the river, reduce pollution, create safe and green riverbanks, and offer citizens a beautiful riverside experience. We are committed to completing this project on time and with the highest quality.”
