Demand for Mandatory Work From Home for IT Employees During Natural Disasters
PCCHSF President Sachin Londhe Urges Pune District Collector to Issue Official Directions
Pune/Pimpri-Chinchwad: In the wake of continuous heavy rainfall over the past two days, normal life in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad has been severely disrupted, with waterlogging in several areas causing major traffic congestion. The situation has been particularly challenging on roads leading to the Hinjawadi IT hub, where commuters have been stranded in long traffic jams. As the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert and schools have been closed as a precautionary measure, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Co-operative Housing Society Federation (PCCHSF) has urged the district administration to officially mandate Work From Home (WFH) for IT employees during such natural disasters.
PCCHSF President Sachin Londhe has submitted a formal representation to the Pune District Collector, requesting that IT companies be directed to allow employees to work remotely whenever heavy rainfall, flooding, or other natural calamities create emergency conditions.
According to Londhe, forcing thousands of IT professionals to travel during extreme weather places an unnecessary burden on an already strained transportation system, compromises public safety, and hampers the movement of emergency services such as ambulances, fire brigades, and police vehicles.
He pointed out that roads leading to major IT parks, including Hinjawadi, Talawade, and surrounding technology hubs, frequently become waterlogged during the monsoon, leaving thousands of employees stranded in traffic for several hours. Such situations not only endanger commuters but also adversely affect their health, well-being, and productivity.
In his representation, Londhe proposed that whenever the IMD issues a Red Alert or the district administration declares a natural disaster or emergency due to heavy rainfall, the authorities should immediately issue official directions to IT companies to implement Work From Home arrangements. This, he said, would significantly reduce the number of vehicles on the roads, ease traffic congestion, and ensure smoother movement of emergency response agencies.
Currently, persistent heavy rains have resulted in waterlogging across several low-lying areas of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Traffic on key routes connecting Hinjawadi IT Park has slowed considerably, with many employees reportedly spending hours stuck in traffic. While educational institutions have been closed in view of the prevailing weather conditions, regular office commuting continues, prompting citizens to question the absence of similar precautionary measures for office-goers.
Expressing confidence that such a policy would safeguard the interests of salaried professionals, housing society residents, and the IT workforce, Londhe urged the administration to take an immediate and positive decision. He also affirmed that the Federation would continue pursuing the demand until an appropriate policy is implemented, emphasizing that public safety should remain the highest priority during natural disasters.
