Pune: Three Killed as Landslide Buries House in Maval; Heavy Rains Claim Five Lives Across District

Pune / Pimpri-Chinchwad / Maval: Torrential rainfall has wreaked havoc across Pune district, with a devastating landslide in Patan village of Maval taluka claiming the lives of three members of the same family in the early hours of Monday. The deceased have been identified as farmer Nandkumar Dattu Tikone, his wife Anita Tikone, and their son Dnyaneshwar (Mauli) Tikone. The family’s daughter-in-law had travelled away from home and narrowly escaped the tragedy.

Continuous heavy rainfall triggered a section of the hillside to collapse, sending a massive pile of mud, rocks and uprooted trees crashing onto the Tikone family’s house. Local residents immediately launched rescue efforts, following which teams from the police, revenue department, disaster management authorities and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) carried out an intensive search and rescue operation. After several hours of efforts, the bodies of the three victims were recovered from the debris.

The incident has cast a pall of gloom over Maval taluka. With incessant rainfall over the past few days, several landslide-prone areas in the region remain under threat. The district administration has urged residents to remain vigilant, follow official advisories and relocate to safer places if necessary. The tragedy has once again brought the issue of safety in landslide-prone rural settlements into sharp focus.

Five Dead, Twenty Injured as Heavy Rain Batters Pune District

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall has claimed the lives of five people across Pune district in various rain-related incidents, while nearly 20 others have been injured. In Pimpri-Chinchwad, one person died after a compound wall collapsed, while another person is reported to have been swept away by floodwaters in Khed taluka.

Pune–Nashik Highway Submerged; Traffic Comes to a Standstill

Relentless rainfall over the past 48 hours has severely disrupted normal life across northern parts of Pune district. In Chakan, cloudburst-like rainfall has transformed sections of the Pune–Nashik Highway into a flowing stream. Traffic has remained completely paralysed for the last eight to ten hours as floodwaters continue to gush across the highway. Hundreds of commuters and motorists have been stranded, with many facing shortages of food and drinking water.

147 Tree-Fall Incidents Reported in Pune City

Since July 1, Pune city has recorded as many as 147 incidents of tree falls due to heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Pune Mayor Manjusha Nagpure has claimed that the civic body’s garden department is often unable to undertake essential tree-pruning work because of opposition from certain environmental groups. According to her, the lack of timely pruning contributes to the rise in tree-fall incidents during periods of intense rainfall. However, her remarks are expected to trigger debate and reactions from various quarters.
