MPSC Aspirants Concerned as Maharashtra Government Plans Promotion of 150 Tehsildars to Deputy Collector Posts
State’s decision to promote Tehsildars despite no vacant quota posts sparks outrage among MPSC candidates fearing reduced job opportunities.

Nagpur:
A major controversy has erupted among MPSC (Maharashtra Public Service Commission) aspirants following the state government’s move to promote around 150 Tehsildars to the rank of Deputy Collector under the promotion quota.
According to reports, the promotion quota posts in the Deputy Collector cadre are not currently vacant, yet the government has decided to grant promotions. This move has triggered protests and disappointment among thousands of MPSC candidates, who now fear that their chances of direct recruitment through the MPSC exams will diminish.
The government, preparing for the upcoming municipal and local body elections, reportedly needs additional administrative manpower across districts. In light of this requirement, the revenue department has initiated steps to elevate existing officers to fill key administrative roles temporarily.
However, MPSC aspirants argue that this decision violates the principles of fair competition and undermines the recruitment process. Student associations and coaching groups across Maharashtra are demanding that the government withdraw or review the promotion order, ensuring that the quota for MPSC recruits remains unaffected.
The issue has quickly become a hot political and administrative debate, with experts warning that such ad-hoc decisions could erode transparency and merit-based recruitment in the state civil services.
