Pimpri-Chinchwad: Tensions rose in Kalevadi on Sunday as thousands participated in an “Aakrosh Morcha” protesting against alleged illegal religious conversions. The march was organized to demand strict action against those accused of converting Hindus through inducements and spreading superstition.

Addressing the gathering, MLA Shankar Jagtap issued a strong warning to the administration, stating, “The patience of Hindus should not be tested. If ignored, the government will be responsible for the consequences.”

The protest march was carried out from Panchanath Chowk to Abhaji Nanekar Chowk in Kalevadi, witnessing participation from a large number of citizens, including women and members of various social organizations.

Among the prominent leaders present were MLA Gopichand Padalkar and MLA Uma Khapre, along with several local representatives and activists.

Speaking at the event, Jagtap said, “In the age of science, claiming to cure diseases through prayers is pure deception. If that were true, hospitals would not be needed.” He further alleged that vulnerable sections of society were being targeted through poverty and ignorance, adding that such activities would not be tolerated in Pimpri-Chinchwad.

He demanded strict enforcement of the Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Act, stating that offenders must face severe punishment, including fines of up to ₹10 lakh. He also urged citizens to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities or local representatives.

MLA Padalkar emphasized that while legal provisions exist, their strict implementation is crucial. He said, “Merely having laws is not enough; authorities must act decisively at the root level. If any group targets society by exploiting helplessness, we will not remain silent.”

The protestors raised key demands, including immediate arrest of those allegedly involved in illegal conversions, investigation and closure of places accused of spreading superstition, and stringent action under relevant laws against individuals disrupting social harmony in the city.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the matter, but sources indicate that the issue has already been raised in the state legislature, with instructions reportedly given to take necessary action.
