The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) confirmed that the deceased was a train driver. RMT General Secretary Eddie Dempsey also verified the fatality following the crash.
Officials from East Midlands Railway stated that the collision involved the 4:40 PM service from Corby and the 3:50 PM service from Nottingham, which struck each other with tremendous force.
Air Ambulances Deployed As Rescue Operation Intensifies
Emergency responders launched a massive rescue operation immediately after the crash. According to the East of England Ambulance Service, at least 11 passengers suffered critical injuries, while 22 others were seriously injured. Another 56 passengers sustained minor injuries.
Air ambulances and specialist emergency response teams were deployed to transport victims to nearby hospitals as quickly as possible. Images and videos circulating on social media showed injured passengers receiving treatment alongside railway tracks while emergency vehicles flooded the disaster zone.
“We Were Thrown Forward Within Seconds”
Passenger Peter Knapp, who was travelling on the rear train, described the terrifying moments after the collision.
“Without any warning, the crash happened suddenly. Within seconds we were thrown onto the seats in front of us, and smoke spread everywhere. People were screaming and crying in panic. When I got up, I saw several passengers with fractured legs, while others were too shocked to even speak.”
His account highlights the violent nature of the impact and the chaos that followed inside the carriages.
Rail Services Severely Disrupted
The accident has caused major disruption to rail services connected to St Pancras Station, with all incoming and outgoing train operations suspended. Authorities have yet to provide clarity on when normal services will resume.
Rail unions have raised serious concerns regarding passenger and staff safety, while investigators are now focusing on a crucial question: how two trains ended up on the same track and collided head-on.
A full-scale investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of one of the most serious railway accidents in recent years.
