Cricket could witness an unprecedented moment this September as Afghanistan is likely to host India in a three-match T20I series at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, making the Indian team the official ‘away side’ despite playing on home soil.

According to media reports, the historic T20I series is expected to be held between September 13 and September 17 in New Delhi. If confirmed, it will mark the first time in cricket history that a foreign nation officially hosts a bilateral T20I series in India.
The proposed arrangement is expected to see Afghanistan act as the designated host nation, even though all matches will be played in India. However, neither the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) nor the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has made an official announcement regarding the series.
The two teams recently concluded a bilateral tour featuring a one-off Test and a three-match ODI series, where India dominated the visitors with a comprehensive victory. Now, Afghanistan is preparing for another tour of India, but under a unique hosting arrangement that could create a new chapter in international cricket.
India currently has a packed international schedule. After completing the T20I assignments against Ireland and England, the Men in Blue are set to tour Zimbabwe for a three-match T20I series before travelling to Sri Lanka for a two-Test series. Following that, several Indian players will participate in the Asian Games, scheduled to begin on September 24.
For Afghanistan, the proposed T20I series comes at a crucial time. Since the conclusion of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the Afghan side has not played a bilateral T20I series. A high-profile contest against India would provide valuable international exposure and preparation ahead of future global tournaments.
While the schedule is yet to receive official approval, the possibility of India becoming the official visiting team in its own country has already generated significant excitement across the cricketing world.
