India is set to conduct its first-ever Digital Census in 2027. The Union Cabinet has approved a massive budget of ₹11,718 crore for the nationwide project. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the census will be carried out in two major phases and will involve nearly 30 lakh field workers.

Phase 1: Housing List & Housing Census

  • Timeline: April 2026 to December 2026

  • This phase will focus on collecting detailed information about households across the country.

Phase 2: Population Enumeration

  • Timeline: February 2027

  • This will include population data, socio-economic indicators, and resource distribution assessments.

Secure Digital Design

According to Minister Vaishnaw, the new digital census platform has been designed with high-level data security to protect citizens’ personal information.


India Moves Toward Coal Self-Reliance

The minister also highlighted India’s achievements in coal production:

  • Over 1 billion tonnes of coal produced in 2024–25

  • Coal imports significantly reduced

  • ₹60,000 crore saved due to lower imports
