Books vs. Screens: Which Is Better?

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. A learner who uses technology wisely discovers a thousand more.”
The world of education is changing faster than ever before. Not long ago, books were the only source of knowledge for students. Today, with just a click, we can attend online classes, watch educational videos, read e-books, and explore information from every corner of the world. As technology continues to shape our lives, an interesting question often arises—Which is better: books or screens?

Books have been our trusted companions for generations. Every page we turn introduces us to new ideas, different cultures, and valuable life lessons. Reading a book requires patience, concentration, and imagination. Unlike digital devices, books do not interrupt us with notifications or advertisements. They allow us to focus deeply, helping us understand concepts better and remember them for a longer time. The joy of holding a book, highlighting important lines, and turning each page is an experience that many readers still treasure.
On the other hand, screens have transformed learning in remarkable ways.

Today, students can access online libraries, educational websites, virtual laboratories, and interactive lessons from anywhere in the world. Difficult topics become easier to understand through videos, animations, and simulations. Technology has made education more accessible, especially for students who may not have easy access to books or coaching classes. It has opened doors to opportunities that were once beyond our imagination.

However, every coin has two sides. While screens offer convenience and speed, they can also become a source of distraction. A student who picks up a phone to study may soon find themselves checking social media, watching videos, or playing games. Spending too much time in front of a screen may also lead to eye strain, disturbed sleep, and reduced physical activity. Technology is undoubtedly powerful, but it must be used with discipline and self-control.

Does this mean books are perfect? Not entirely. Printed books can sometimes become outdated, and carrying several textbooks every day can be tiring. In comparison, a single tablet or laptop can store thousands of books and provide updated information instantly. This shows that both books and screens have their own strengths and limitations.

Instead of debating which one is better, perhaps we should learn how to use both wisely. Books help us develop imagination, critical thinking, and the habit of deep reading, while screens make learning interactive, quick, and globally connected. Together, they complement each other and create a balanced learning experience.
As students preparing for the future, we should remember that success does not depend on whether we study from paper or pixels. It depends on our curiosity, dedication, and willingness to learn. A book can inspire us with timeless wisdom, while technology can connect us to endless possibilities. The real power lies not in choosing one over the other, but in knowing when and how to use each effectively.

In the end, books build the foundation of knowledge, while screens expand its horizons. A wise student is not the one who chooses between them, but the one who learns to make the best use of both.
