In a major push towards economic and industrial development, the Maharashtra government has announced significant initiatives for Pune under its new Industry, Investment and Services Policy. The policy aims to transform Pune into a key economic growth engine by accelerating the defence manufacturing sector and establishing the city as a Global Capability Centre (GCC) Hub.

Three Defence Corridors Planned Across Maharashtra

To strengthen the state’s aerospace and defence manufacturing ecosystem, the government will develop three defence corridors, including the strategically important Pune–Ahilyanagar–Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar corridor. The other two corridors will be:

  • Nagpur–Wardha–Amravati–Savner

  • Nashik–Dhule

These corridors have been identified due to their proximity to airports, ports, and critical infrastructure, which will significantly boost defence and aerospace manufacturing.

NABL-Accredited Testing and Certification Labs in Pune

Pune’s strong manufacturing base will further benefit from the establishment of NABL-accredited testing and quality certification laboratories. These facilities will enable faster product testing, quality assurance, and certification for national and international manufacturers, reducing turnaround time and improving export competitiveness.

Pune to Emerge as a Global Capability Centre (GCC) Hub

With multinational companies increasingly setting up GCCs in Pune, the state government has announced targeted incentives to promote the city as a global hub. These include:

  • Salary subsidies

  • Tax concessions

  • Research and development incentives

  • Capital investment support

Mumbai and Pune will be promoted as Maharashtra’s primary GCC destinations, strengthening the city’s position in the global services ecosystem.

Innovation and Startup Hub Planned

To position Maharashtra as a global leader in innovation and entrepreneurship, the government plans to establish a 100-acre Innovation and Startup Hub in Pune Metropolitan Region or Navi Mumbai. The hub will support startups and R&D in advanced sectors such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain, Biotechnology, Green Energy, and Smart Manufacturing, and will include innovation labs, technology parks, and collaborative office spaces.

Industry Welcomes the Move

Reacting to the announcement, Prashant Girbane, Director General of MCCIA, said that initiatives like the defence corridor, NABL laboratories, and GCC hub will significantly strengthen Pune’s industrial ecosystem and enhance its global identity as a centre for defence manufacturing, innovation, and advanced services.
