A year after the devastating fire that gutted Kolhapur’s iconic Keshavrao Bhosale Theatre, actor Swapnil Rajshekhar expressed disappointment over the slow reconstruction process, calling out government apathy in a powerful social media post.
Kolhapur (Maharashtra):
Almost a year after the devastating fire that destroyed the Keshavrao Bhosale Theatre, one of Kolhapur’s most cherished cultural landmarks, actor Swapnil Rajshekhar has voiced his frustration over the delay in reconstruction.
Despite funds being sanctioned and the project handed to the municipal authorities, the theatre restoration remains incomplete, Rajshekhar revealed in a heartfelt social media post.
Background: The Fire That Shocked Maharashtra
On August 8, 2024, a massive fire broke out at the Keshavrao Bhosale Theatre, completely gutting the roof, stage, chairs, and sound systems. The incident left the cultural community across Maharashtra in shock and mourning.
The government soon approved funds for rebuilding, but one year later, the reconstruction is still far from completion.
Rajshekhar’s Emotional Post
Actor Swapnil Rajshekhar, who is known for his vocal stance on cultural issues, took to social media to express his dismay.
He wrote:
“It’s been a year since the reconstruction process began, but the iconic Keshavrao Bhosale Theatre still lies incomplete. We, the artists and theatre lovers, have been waiting with bated breath for its revival. Our only expectation is that the new structure should be flawless, artist-friendly, and completed within the promised timeline.”
Criticism of Government Apathy
Continuing his post, Rajshekhar criticized the slow pace of government work and visible flaws in the ongoing construction.
He added:
“As always, the signs of administrative negligence are evident. Deadlines are ignored, and the quality of work is questionable. But this time, we — the artists and citizens — are alert and observant. We are determined to ensure transparency and quality in every step.”
A Unique Protest: Performance Amid the Ruins
Marking ‘Rangabhoomi Din’ (Theatre Day), Rajshekhar announced that artists would stage live performances inside the incomplete theatre structure to draw the administration’s attention to the delay.
“We will register our protest through art — the most powerful weapon we possess,” he wrote.
“From tomorrow, we will perform within the unfinished walls of Keshavrao Bhosale Theatre to awaken the administration.”
A Call to the Audience
In his closing message, Rajshekhar appealed to the public and theatre lovers for their support:
“We need the support of every theatre enthusiast. Let’s meet at our pride — Kolhapur’s Keshavrao Bhosale Theatre. ‘Sirf hungama khada karna koi maqsad nahi, apni koshish hai ke surat badalni chahiye… Jai Nateshwar!’”
