A major controversy has erupted over India’s world-famous Alphonso Mango, known globally as the “Hapus of Konkan.” Gujarat has officially filed an application seeking a Geographical Indication (GI) Tag under the name “Valsad Hapus,” triggering sharp reactions and concern among mango farmers in Maharashtra.

The application has been submitted by Gandhinagar and Navsari Agricultural University, claiming Valsad-grown mangoes deserve the same recognition.

⚖️ First Hearing Held on October 30

After completing required documentation, the first hearing on this application took place on October 30.

However, Maharashtra’s Konkan Mango Producers and Traders Associations have strongly opposed the claim, arguing that awarding a GI tag to Valsad Hapus could damage the market identity and export value of Konkan Alphonso mangoes.

🥭 Konkan Alphonso: The Original GI Holder

The Konkan Alphonso received its GI certification in 2008 — the first and only GI recognition specifically tied to the mango’s:

  • Unique climate

  • Coastal soil composition

  • Aroma and texture

  • Distinct flavour profile

Supporting documents were validated until 2018, officially securing the identity of Devgad and Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes.

Opponents argue that while Gujarat may brand its produce based on geographical identity, calling it “Hapus” or “Alphonso” could mislead consumers and dilute the original brand value.

🥭 “Call It Valsad Mango, Not Hapus”: Konkan Producers

Konkan growers insist that Gujarat can market its mangoes as “Valsad Mango,” similar to other regional mango varieties like Malgova, Langda or Migiya — but not as Hapus/Alphonso, which they say culturally and historically belongs to coastal Maharashtra.

🗳️ Political Reactions Intensify

The issue has taken a political turn, with leaders in Maharashtra expressing strong emotions:

  • Atul Bhatkhalkar (BJP):
“No mango can match the taste of Devgad or Ratnagiri Alphonso. Even if others attempt it, the original remains unmatched.”

  • Sanjay Raut (Shiv Sena – UBT):
“The world knows Alphonso is King of Konkan. Traders from Dubai and across the globe come only for Konkan Hapus.”

Efforts were reportedly made to reach Dr. Vivek Bhide, who filed the GI petition, but he remained unavailable for comment.

🚨 Konkan Farmers Prepare for Legal Battle

The GI dispute has sparked emotional and economic concern among Konkan’s mango growers. Many say the Alphonso is not just a fruit, but an identity and livelihood source for thousands of families.

Farmers’ groups are now preparing to fight the case vigorously to protect the heritage, authenticity and market value of Konkan Hapus.

The dispute is expected to intensify in the coming hearings.
