Kolkata Hotel Fire: 9 Killed, 28 Rescued in Midnight Blaze

Kolkata | A massive fire broke out at a hotel in the Free School Street area, near Mirza Ghalib Street in central Kolkata, in the early hours of Wednesday. Nine people were killed in the blaze, while firefighters managed to rescue 28 people from the hotel.
Fire Broke Out Around Midnight; Thick Smoke Hampered Rescue
According to police sources, the fire suddenly broke out at around 2 to 2:30 am on Tuesday night. Since it was late at night, most of the guests were asleep in their rooms when the fire erupted. Flames and thick smoke spread rapidly, triggering panic inside the hotel.
Fortunately, the fire brigade headquarters was located nearby, allowing firefighting teams to reach the spot quickly. Firefighters broke open windows and used ladders to enter the building and safely evacuate 28 people who were trapped inside.

Bangladeshis, Child Among Those Killed
The nine victims reportedly included people from Bangladesh, Meghalaya and Alipore in West Bengal. The deceased included men, women and a young child. Authorities are currently working to establish their identities.
The 28 rescued people were taken to various hospitals in Kolkata for medical treatment. Officials said the area frequently receives travellers from Bangladesh.
