IPL or Test Cricket? Bethell Ignites Country vs Club Debate

England’s young all-rounder Jacob Bethell has found himself at the centre of a heated debate after choosing to remain with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) during the IPL instead of joining England’s Test squad for the New Zealand series.

The controversy has reignited cricket’s long-running ‘Country vs Club’ debate, with former England captain Alastair Cook questioning whether staying on the IPL bench is more valuable than representing the national team in Test cricket.

Cook argued that Bethell knew England’s Test series schedule well in advance and should have prioritised his country over franchise commitments.

“What is the point of sitting on the IPL bench when you have the opportunity to play Test cricket for your country?” Cook questioned during the Stick to Cricket podcast on The Overlap Cricket YouTube channel.

The discussion featured several cricket personalities, including Dinesh Karthik, Michael Vaughan, David Lloyd, Phil Tufnell, and RCB Director Mo Bobat, with opinions sharply divided over the issue.

Dinesh Karthik Defends Bethell’s Decision

RCB mentor Dinesh Karthik strongly defended Bethell, saying the youngster was under contract with the franchise and remained an important part of the squad even if he wasn’t in the playing XI.

According to Karthik, IPL team selection depends on pitch conditions, opposition, overseas player combinations and match-ups, meaning every contracted player has a role to play.

He added that breaking a contract simply because a player isn’t selected would create a dangerous precedent for franchise cricket.

“He was available whenever the team needed him. That’s what matters. There is nothing wrong with honouring your contract and earning professionally,” Karthik said.

Cook: Test Cricket Must Come First

Cook maintained that Test cricket remains the ultimate format and should always take priority over franchise leagues.

He insisted England missed an important player because Bethell chose to stay in India despite having limited opportunities in RCB’s starting XI.

“England cricket is bigger than the IPL. Test cricket is where players are truly tested,” Cook remarked.

Kevin Pietersen Backs IPL Choice

Former England batter Kevin Pietersen supported Bethell’s decision, arguing that spending two months alongside elite players like Virat Kohli offers invaluable learning experiences, even without regular match time.

Pietersen believes the exposure, training environment and dressing-room culture in the IPL will ultimately benefit Bethell’s international career.

He also questioned England’s scheduling, suggesting the New Zealand series could have been planned outside the IPL window.

A Bigger Challenge for Modern Cricket

The debate highlights a growing challenge faced by international cricket boards as lucrative T20 leagues continue to compete with international commitments.

While England expects centrally contracted players to prioritise national duty, countries like New Zealand have adopted a more flexible approach, allowing several players to participate in franchise leagues while remaining available for international selection.

At just 22 years old, Bethell has already represented England in 9 Tests, 24 ODIs and 36 T20Is and is widely regarded as one of the country’s brightest future stars.

With franchise cricket becoming increasingly lucrative, the question remains: Should players choose country first or honour professional league commitments?
