SpiceJet Adds Three Airbus A320 Aircraft to Fleet
SpiceJet has strengthened its fleet by inducting three Airbus A320 aircraft under a damp lease arrangement as part of its ongoing strategy to reduce operational costs while expanding capacity. The airline confirmed that all three aircraft have arrived in India and are expected to begin commercial operations later this week.
Under the damp lease agreement, the aircraft, pilots, and maintenance services will be provided by the leasing company, while SpiceJet will deploy its own cabin crew. The airline believes the move will help meet the growing demand for air travel, improve network connectivity, and increase flight frequencies on existing routes.

Founded in May 2005, SpiceJet operates domestic and international flights with a focus on providing affordable air travel. The airline is IATA-IOSA certified and currently operates a fleet that includes Boeing 737 and Q400 aircraft. It is also one of India’s leading regional carriers under the UDAN (Regional Connectivity Scheme), connecting smaller cities across the country.
Most aircraft in SpiceJet’s fleet feature the airline’s SpiceMax service, offering one of the most spacious economy-class seating arrangements available in India.
Facing financial challenges, SpiceJet has increasingly focused on cost optimisation by leasing aircraft instead of purchasing them outright. The induction of the three Airbus A320s is expected to significantly reduce capital expenditure while providing greater operational flexibility.
The airline also revealed that it is in discussions with several other leasing companies to induct additional aircraft over the coming months as part of its long-term fleet expansion strategy. The expansion is expected to support new routes, strengthen existing services, and improve overall connectivity.
Commenting on the development, Debojo Maharshi, Chief Business Officer of SpiceJet, said the addition of the three aircraft is part of the airline’s planned capacity expansion to cater to rising passenger demand.
What is a Damp Lease?
A damp lease is a leasing arrangement in which the lessor provides the aircraft, pilots, maintenance, and insurance, while the airline leasing the aircraft is responsible for supplying its own cabin crew.
