Jasprit Bumrah Set to Return to ODI Cricket for India After Nearly Three Years
India's pace spearhead is expected to make his long-awaited ODI comeback against England as workload management and injuries kept him out of the 50-over format.
New Delhi: Star Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is set to make his long-awaited return to One-Day International (ODI) cricket for India after nearly three years, with the first ODI against England marking his comeback to the 50-over format.

Bumrah last featured in an ODI during India’s heartbreaking defeat to Australia in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final, where the unbeaten Indian side fell short of lifting the trophy on home soil.
Since then, recurring injuries and a carefully managed workload have kept Bumrah away from ODI cricket. While he remained a key member of India’s Test and T20I squads, he missed several ODI series, including tours of South Africa, Australia, and bilateral series against England, New Zealand, and Afghanistan. He also missed the ICC Champions Trophy due to injury.
Known for his deadly yorkers, sharp bouncers, and deceptive slower deliveries, Bumrah has remained India’s most dependable fast bowler across formats. However, the Indian team management has prioritised his fitness, particularly for Test cricket, considering his history of back injuries.
Former New Zealand fast bowler and coach Shane Bond had previously cautioned that playing Bumrah continuously across all three formats could shorten his career due to the physical demands on his body.
Despite his absence from ODI cricket, Bumrah has continued to excel in other formats. Over the past three years, he has represented India in 21 Test matches and 33 T20 Internationals. He was named the Player of the Tournament at the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup and earned the Player of the Match award in the 2026 T20 World Cup final.
Bumrah also featured in all three recent Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons, playing 13 matches in 2024, 12 in 2025, and 13 in 2026.
His return is expected to significantly strengthen India’s bowling attack as the team looks to bounce back in the ODI series against England after a disappointing T20 campaign.
