According to reports, informal discussions are underway between senior TVK leaders and several AIADMK legislators regarding a possible political realignment. If the plan materialises, the MLAs are expected to resign before August 15, join the ruling TVK, and subsequently contest the by-elections.

The development comes just months after Joseph Vijay was sworn in as the Chief Minister on May 10, 2026. Since taking office, Vijay has announced several major policy decisions, drawing nationwide attention to his administration.

Sources familiar with the discussions indicated that the objective is to complete the political transition before the Election Commission announces the by-election schedule.

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has 234 seats, with seven currently vacant, reducing the effective strength to 227 members. TVK currently holds 107 MLAs. Earlier, former AIADMK ministers C. Vijayabaskar and M.R. Vijayabaskar, along with several former legislators, joined TVK after resigning from the party. Previously, four AIADMK MLAs had also switched to TVK, reducing the Opposition’s strength.

Following the 2026 Assembly elections, TVK emerged as the single-largest party with 107 seats but fell short of the majority mark. The party eventually formed the government after receiving support from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Indian National Congress.

While there has been no official confirmation from either TVK or AIADMK regarding the reported defections, the developments have intensified political discussions across Tamil Nadu.
