The incident occurred after the Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Palkhi procession had departed from Saswad and reached Jejuri for its scheduled halt. According to Superintendent of Police Sandeepsingh Gill, the three deceased women were residents of Kasbedigraj village in Sangli district. The four injured women are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Jejuri.

Police said the truck, associated with the Raghunath Maharaj Pokharbisikar Dindi from Loha taluka in Nanded district, hit seven women pilgrims near Sai Deep Lodge close to the Belsar toll area on the Saswad–Jejuri road. The injured women were rushed to a nearby hospital, where three were declared dead before treatment could begin.

The truck driver has been taken into police custody, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.

The tragic incident has cast a pall of gloom over the annual Palkhi procession, with thousands of devotees expressing grief after learning about the deaths of the women pilgrims.

In a separate accident earlier the same day, an unidentified man was killed after being run over by a truck near the base of Dive Ghat. Police suspect the victim was sleeping by the roadside when the incident occurred. A case has been registered against the truck driver, and further investigation is in progress.
