Rajmachi Fort Road Reopens After Landslide Near Lonavala

Pune | Lonavala, July 5: A landslide triggered by continuous monsoon rainfall temporarily disrupted traffic on the road leading to Rajmachi Fort from Lonavala on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred near the popular Katal Waterfall, where a large amount of mud, rocks, and debris slid onto the roadway, blocking vehicular movement for some time.

The sudden landslide caused inconvenience to tourists and local commuters travelling towards Rajmachi Fort, one of the most visited monsoon destinations in Pune district. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident.

Upon receiving information, the local administration and emergency response teams immediately rushed to the spot. A JCB machine was deployed to remove the accumulated debris, mud, and rocks from the road. The clearance operation was carried out on a war footing, enabling authorities to restore traffic within a short period.

Following the successful removal of the debris, the road has now been reopened for all types of vehicles. Normal traffic movement has resumed, bringing relief to tourists and residents who were stranded due to the temporary closure.

Monsoon Increases Landslide Threat

Officials have warned that continuous rainfall across the Sahyadri region has significantly increased the possibility of landslides, especially on mountain roads leading to popular tourist destinations such as Rajmachi, Bhushi Dam, Tiger Point, and other hill routes around Lonavala.

The soil in these hilly areas becomes unstable during heavy rainfall, making rockfalls and landslides more likely. Authorities have therefore appealed to motorists and tourists to avoid unnecessary travel during intense rain and to strictly follow safety instructions issued by local officials.

Authorities Issue Safety Advisory

The administration has urged visitors travelling towards Rajmachi Fort and nearby tourist spots to drive carefully, maintain safe distances between vehicles, avoid parking near hill slopes, and remain alert while passing through landslide-prone stretches.

Officials have also stated that rescue teams and monitoring staff are keeping a close watch on vulnerable locations, and immediate action will be taken if fresh landslides occur due to ongoing heavy rainfall.

Rajmachi Remains a Monsoon Favourite

Rajmachi Fort attracts thousands of trekkers and tourists every monsoon because of its lush green valleys, waterfalls, mist-covered mountains, and scenic landscapes. However, the administration has reminded visitors that while the rainy season enhances the region’s natural beauty, it also brings serious risks such as landslides, slippery roads, flash floods, and poor visibility.

Tourists are advised to check weather conditions before travelling and cooperate with local authorities to ensure a safe and hassle-free journey.
