Heavy Rains: 17 NDRF Teams Deployed Across Maharashtra

Mumbai: With heavy rainfall intensifying across several parts of Maharashtra, the state administration has urged citizens to strictly follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel in high-risk areas. To strengthen disaster response, 17 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and 6 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been strategically deployed across the state.

According to the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), NDRF teams have been stationed at key locations, including four teams in Mumbai, two each in Palghar and Nagpur, and one team each in Pune, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Satara, Kolhapur, Sangli and Dharashiv. Meanwhile, SDRF teams have been positioned in Dhule, Nagpur, Nanded and Gadchiroli to respond to emergency situations.

Extremely Heavy Rainfall Triggers Red Alert

Several regions witnessed exceptionally heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours. Mumbai’s Santacruz recorded 151.2 mm of rainfall, while Colaba received 128 mm. Among the worst-hit areas were Lonavala (670 mm), Tamhini (580 mm) and Ambona (537 mm).

Other major rainfall figures include:

• Bhivpuri – 266 mm
• Matheran – 302 mm
• Karjat – 291.5 mm
• Mulshi – 230 mm
• Panvel – 182.5 mm
• Juhu Airport – 325 mm
• Bhayander – 188.5 mm

Authorities have issued Red Alerts for Matheran, Lonavala, Khopoli and Lohagad, warning of an extremely high risk of landslides due to continuous heavy rainfall.

Roads and Railway Services Severely Disrupted

The relentless rain has caused major transportation disruptions across Maharashtra.

• The Mumbai-Goa National Highway has been closed after a landslide at Kashedi Ghat.
• The old Mumbai-Pune Highway near Khopoli remains shut due to severe waterlogging.
• Traffic on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway has been suspended in both directions after landslides near the Missing Link project.
• Railway services between Monkey Hill and Thakurwadi have been suspended following multiple landslides.
• The Pune-Mumbai railway line has also been affected.

Authorities said restoration work is underway on a war footing to clear debris and reopen vital road and rail links.

Rescue Operations Continue

In Ghorawadi, Maval Taluka, an ST bus carrying 25 passengers was trapped in floodwaters. An NDRF team successfully rescued all passengers without any injuries.

Meanwhile, in Patan village of Maval, a house was buried under a landslide, with officials fearing three to four people may be trapped beneath the debris. NDRF teams have been deployed, and rescue operations are continuing.

In another tragic incident at Mankhurd, Mumbai, a building collapsed on a slum settlement, killing six people and injuring one person. Emergency teams remain at the site as rescue operations continue.

The State Emergency Operations Centre said it is continuously monitoring weather conditions using the GEO-DSS system to assess disaster risks and issue timely alerts across vulnerable districts.
