The southwest monsoon, which has been advancing rapidly after making its onset over Kerala, has now reached the doorstep of Maharashtra and is likely to enter the state within the next 48 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Following its arrival in parts of Goa, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, weather conditions have become favorable for its further progression into Maharashtra.

Over the past few days, weather patterns across the state have undergone significant changes, with pre-monsoon showers already affecting several regions. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for rainfall in many districts across Konkan, Central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha. Most parts of the state are expected to witness rain accompanied by thunderstorms over the next four days.

The rainfall activity is likely to remain active between June 5 and June 11 across Konkan, Goa, Central Maharashtra, and Marathwada. All districts in South Konkan and Central Maharashtra have been placed under a yellow alert, while some areas of Vidarbha may experience heavy rainfall. Light to moderate showers are also expected in parts of Marathwada.

Districts including Nashik, Pune, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Ahmednagar, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Beed, Buldhana, Akola, Amravati, Washim, Yavatmal, Wardha, Nagpur, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli have been issued yellow alerts for rainfall. Meanwhile, hot and humid weather conditions are expected to persist in Palghar, Thane, and Mumbai, although isolated light showers may occur during the afternoon hours.

Although the initial forecast regarding the monsoon’s onset did not materialize as expected, the system has gained momentum after entering Kerala. Meteorologists have observed that this year’s monsoon is advancing faster than in recent years. Unlike previous seasons, when the monsoon typically lingered around the Karwar region for several days, it has reached the Goa coastline within just 24 hours.

Vidarbha continues to experience high temperatures, but weather officials have forecast thunderstorms, lightning, and rainfall accompanied by winds of up to 50 kmph between June 7 and June 9. Along the Konkan coast, rainfall with wind speeds reaching up to 60 kmph is expected between June 5 and June 10.

The IMD has also predicted a decline of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures across the state over the next 48 hours, bringing much-needed relief to residents affected by intense summer heat. According to the latest forecast, Maharashtra is highly likely to record the official onset of the southwest monsoon within the next two days.
