Pakistan Bangladesh T20 World Cup 2026 |
Pakistan once again played a “double game” using Bangladesh as a shield in its boycott drama ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026. While Pakistan pretended to stand firm on the issue of boycotting matches, its act did not last long in front of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The moment ICC adopted a strict stance, Pakistan backed down.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), fearing heavy financial losses and the threat of severe sanctions, performed a complete U-turn after initially talking about boycotting the match against India. Pakistan has now confirmed that it will play the India–Pakistan match scheduled for 15 February. Observers believe that Pakistan never truly intended to boycott the match; instead, the threat was merely a bargaining tool and not a final decision.

Using Bangladesh as a Shield

The PCB lacks the courage to directly conspire against India. Therefore, it chose to use Bangladesh as a proxy. Pakistan created the impression that there was a mutual understanding between Pakistan and Bangladesh. This was a calculated move aimed at putting pressure on the ICC through Bangladesh and creating obstacles for the T20 World Cup being hosted in India.

However, this drama did not survive for long before the ICC. Once the ICC issued a warning, Pakistan immediately backed down. Unfortunately, the country that suffered the most due to this tactic was Bangladesh, which had been used as a shield.

Was It a Double Game?

In the boycott narrative, Pakistan pushed Bangladesh to the front. Bangladesh refused to play in India citing security concerns and insisted on relocating matches at the last moment. Encouraged by Pakistan, Bangladesh crossed all limits. Eventually, the ICC was forced to take a tough decision and exclude Bangladesh from the T20 World Cup.

After this, Pakistan floated another narrative, claiming it would boycott the India–Pakistan match. This move was aimed at increasing pressure on the ICC and creating difficulties for India. However, as soon as the possibility of strict action against Pakistan emerged, PCB retreated and announced that it would play the match against India.

This clearly indicates that Pakistan used Bangladesh to create pressure on the ICC. But when it came to standing firm on its own decision, Pakistan backed off due to fear of financial losses and severe punishment.

Bangladesh Left in the Lurch

PCB’s so-called solidarity with Bangladesh turned out to be nothing more than an act. Once Bangladesh was used as a tool, it was abandoned. As a result, Bangladesh’s relations with the ICC have deteriorated, cricketing ties with India have become strained, and Bangladeshi players have suffered financial losses.

This episode has clearly exposed the two faces of the Pakistan Cricket Board.

The Financial Reality

The India–Pakistan match is the backbone of ICC’s revenue model. Broadcasting rights, advertisements, and global viewership figures depend heavily on this single match. Any disruption to this fixture would be unacceptable to the ICC. The financial burden of such a disruption would have fallen directly on Pakistan. Moreover, Pakistan’s future standing in the global cricket ecosystem would have suffered severely.

Pressure Tactics Failed

PCB believed that it could bend the ICC using the hybrid model and political sympathy. However, the ICC made it clear that the tournament is bigger than any single cricket board. The ICC categorically stated that it would not alter its structure or exert pressure on India.

Once Pakistan realised that its pressure tactics would not work, it backed down and withdrew its boycott threat. However, this U-turn has seriously damaged Pakistan’s credibility. By mixing politics with cricket, PCB has sent a negative message to the cricketing world and stands completely exposed.
