Mumbai |  Marking a historic milestone in India’s electric vehicle (EV) sector, world-renowned electric car manufacturer Tesla inaugurated its first showroom in India today. The showroom has been launched at the Jio World Drive Mall in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai. The inauguration ceremony was conducted by Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis.

Not just a showroom — a complete ecosystem in Mumbai
Tesla has not merely opened a showroom in Mumbai; the company is establishing a complete customer experience setup. This includes an experience center, delivery system, logistics support, and servicing infrastructure. Speaking at the event, Deputy CM Fadnavis said, “India has been eagerly awaiting Tesla’s arrival for many years. It is a matter of pride that this journey begins from Maharashtra. The state is leading the EV revolution in India, and I am confident that Tesla’s complete ecosystem will soon be established here.”

Model Y now available in India; prices start from ₹60 lakh
Tesla’s popular Model Y, a compact electric SUV, is now available at the Mumbai showroom. According to the company’s official website, the starting price of this model is ₹59.89 lakh, with an estimated on-road price of around ₹61.7 lakh. The Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive variant could cost up to ₹71.02 lakh on road.

High import duties pushing prices upward
Currently, Tesla vehicles are being imported from the U.S. and China. Due to this, approximately 70% in import duties and taxes are being levied, significantly increasing the overall cost for Indian buyers. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously expressed dissatisfaction over India’s high import tax regime.

India’s EV market accelerating rapidly
India ranks as the third-largest automobile market in the world, and the demand for electric vehicles is steadily increasing. Over 13,000 EV cars were sold in June alone. As EV adoption grows, the entry of global brands like Tesla into the Indian market marks a significant and timely development.

Tesla’s arrival-more than car sales — a step toward technology and employment
Tesla’s entry into India is expected to bring more than just high-end electric cars. It signals the spread of advanced technology, the development of EV charging infrastructure, and the creation of new employment opportunities — especially in Maharashtra.
