The Government of Karnataka is considering imposing a ban on social media usage for children below the age of 16. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on March 6 while presenting the state’s 2026–27 annual budget.

Speaking during the budget presentation, Siddaramaiah stated that the government is planning to restrict social media access for children under 16 years of age due to growing concerns over the harmful effects of excessive mobile phone usage on young minds.

He said the move is aimed at reducing the negative impact of prolonged mobile and social media use among minors. According to the Chief Minister, studies and observations indicate that excessive screen time is affecting children’s mental health, concentration, and overall development.

In addition to this announcement, the Chief Minister also revealed plans to establish an advanced Artificial Intelligence and Technology Park under the Indian Institute of Science. The project will include a dedicated Bengaluru Robotics and AI Innovation Zone, aimed at strengthening the state’s technology ecosystem.

The government plans to develop robotics and AI campuses with the support of organizations such as the Indian Space Research Organisation and Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation.

This budget marks the 17th budget presentation by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. During his speech, he also criticized the Government of India, alleging that the central government has not been sufficiently supportive of states and is not functioning in the spirit of cooperative federalism.

Siddaramaiah said that the Karnataka government is focusing on a balanced development strategy that combines welfare schemes with strong infrastructure development. He also urged the central government to consider the state’s demands with greater sensitivity to ensure long-term economic growth.
