A Pinch on the Common Man’s Pocket! Massive 30% Hike in Edible Oil Prices; Now You’ll Have to Shell Out ‘This Much’ for a Liter
With a 25–30% surge in edible oil prices, groundnut oil has hit the ₹175 mark; global supply disruptions have led to a significant rise in household kitchen expenses for the common man.
Jalgaon: Over the past five to six months, there has been a significant rise in the prices of various edible oils, including groundnut oil. Consequently, the kitchen budgets of ordinary households have been thrown into disarray. As a fallout of the Gulf War, edible oil prices across Jalgaon city and the entire district have currently surged by 25 to 30 percent. This inflationary trend is hitting middle-class and poor families the hardest.

According to data gathered from local markets, the price of groundnut oil has reached ₹175 per liter. Similarly, there has been a substantial increase in the prices of sunflower and palm oils as well. The daily fluctuations in retail market rates have created an atmosphere of confusion among consumers. Traders attribute this price hike to a multitude of factors.
Disruptions in the global supply of crude oil have driven up import costs. Given India’s heavy reliance on imports to meet its edible oil requirements, changes in the global market are having a direct impact on local markets.
Furthermore, rising transportation costs, the depreciation of the Rupee against the Dollar, and hoarding practices are also fueling this price escalation. The impact of this price hike is not limited to domestic consumption alone; it is also adversely affecting the hotel and food service industries. In many establishments, the prices of food items have been raised. Meanwhile, some places are attempting to mitigate costs by reducing their usage of cooking oil.
Consequently, a noticeable decline has been observed in the sales of oily and fried food items. Consumers, too, are making concerted efforts to keep their household expenses under control. Some families have reduced their consumption of oil. There appears to be a trend towards shifting to alternative food items. However, since oil is an essential commodity that cannot be completely avoided, the financial strain on households is mounting.
Meanwhile, it is being suggested that if the international situation improves in the near future, prices are likely to stabilize. Nevertheless, given the current circumstances, the possibility that edible oil prices will remain at elevated levels cannot be ruled out. Consequently, citizens are demanding that the government implement measures to bring this situation under control.
