Cricket fans:
believe that the record for the most centuries belongs solely to Sachin Tendulkar, who has 100 international hundreds. However, the actual world record for the highest number of centuries in cricket is held by England’s legendary batsman Sir Jack Hobbs, who smashed 199 centuries in first-class cricket — a record untouched even today.

A World Record in Centuries

Although Hobbs does not hold the record in international cricket, his first-class century tally puts him far ahead of Sachin Tendulkar.

During his extraordinary career, Hobbs scored:

  • 199 centuries

  • 273 half-centuries

In 834 first-class matches, he scored a total of 61,760 runs at an impressive average of 50.70.
Hobbs made his Test debut on 1 January 1908 against Australia.

He played cricket for 23 years, and his final match also came against Australia in August 1930. In 1953, he was awarded knighthood — becoming the first cricketer in the world to receive this honor.

He made his first-class debut in 1905 and continued playing until 1934 — nearly three decades of cricket.

Career Summary:

  • Total Runs: 61,760

  • Centuries: 199

  • Half-centuries: 273

How Far Behind Is Sachin Tendulkar?

In first-class cricket, Sachin Tendulkar’s numbers, though remarkable, fall short of Hobbs’ monumental record.

Sachin’s first-class stats:

  • 310 matches

  • 25,396 runs (Avg: 57.84)

  • 81 centuries

  • 116 half-centuries

Despite phenomenal achievements, Hobbs’ mountain of 199 centuries remains unmatched.
Hobbs also holds another rare milestone — a Test century at the age of 46, a record yet to be broken.
In 61 Test matches, he scored 5,410 runs, including 15 centuries and 28 fifties.
