Bangladesh’s preparations for their upcoming Test series in Australia have suffered a major setback after they were bowled out for just 54 runs against a Cricket Australia XI in a three-day practice match in Darwin.

The Bangladesh batting lineup completely collapsed in the second innings, with Australia’s young left-arm medium-fast bowler Campbell Thompson emerging as the star performer. The 22-year-old pacer ripped through the Bangladesh batting order, claiming an impressive eight wickets for just 25 runs in 11 overs.
Thompson’s stunning spell played a major role in Bangladesh suffering a humiliating innings and 38-run defeat ahead of their Test series.
Who is Campbell Thompson?
Campbell Thompson is a 22-year-old left-arm medium-fast bowler who plays domestic cricket for South Australia. Despite having very limited first-class experience, Thompson produced a remarkable performance against Bangladesh.
Born on January 18, 2004, Thompson made his List-A debut on February 10, 2026, playing for South Australia against New South Wales in the One-Day Cup.
Just six days later, on February 16, 2026, he made his Sheffield Shield debut against Queensland. That remains his only first-class appearance before the practice match against Bangladesh.
Despite his limited experience at the first-class level, Thompson produced a devastating bowling performance and dismantled Bangladesh’s batting lineup.
Bangladesh Collapse After 92-Run Deficit
Bangladesh posted 263 runs in the first innings, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz scoring an unbeaten century.
In reply, Cricket Australia XI built a strong total of 355 runs, with Teague Wyllie playing a crucial role by smashing 130 runs. The hosts therefore secured a 92-run first-innings lead.
However, Bangladesh’s second innings turned into a complete batting disaster.
Apart from opener Tanzid Hasan, none of the Bangladesh batters managed to reach double figures. Wickets continued to fall rapidly as Thompson and the Australian bowlers tore through the batting order.
Bangladesh were eventually dismissed for just 54 runs, giving Cricket Australia XI a massive innings victory.
Thompson Takes 8 Wickets
Campbell Thompson was the biggest reason behind Bangladesh’s dramatic collapse. He claimed 8 wickets for 25 runs in 11 overs in the second innings.
He had also picked up one wicket in the first innings, finishing the practice match with nine wickets overall.
Australia needed just 22 overs to bowl Bangladesh out for 54, highlighting the complete dominance of the Cricket Australia XI bowling attack.
For Thompson, the performance is a major breakthrough. Having played only one first-class match before this encounter, the young pacer has suddenly grabbed attention by producing an extraordinary spell against an international Test side.
