Virat Kohli to Play Vijay Hazare Trophy After 15 Years
Kohli makes himself available for domestic one-day tournament to prove form and fitness ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup cycle.

Virat Kohli:
is set to return to the Vijay Hazare Trophy after almost 15 years, marking a major development in Indian cricket’s domestic circuit. The Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) confirmed that Kohli has officially informed them of his availability for the tournament starting 24 December 2025.
DDCA President Rohan Jaitley stated that Kohli’s experience will be invaluable for Delhi’s young squad, adding that the star batter will serve as a strong mentor figure.
Why is Kohli Playing Domestic Cricket Again?
Since retiring from Test and T20 cricket, Kohli plays only ODIs. With limited ODI series scheduled before the 2027 World Cup, domestic performance becomes crucial for national selection. Following BCCI’s new mandate in January, contracted players must participate in domestic cricket to be eligible for India selection.
This decision comes amid speculation that Kohli and Rohit Sharma might step back from the ODI format. However, Kohli’s participation in Vijay Hazare ends all rumours.
Kohli’s Recent Form
Returning from London, Kohli put in intense preparation before the South Africa ODI series. At Ranchi, he struck a magnificent 135-run century, reaffirming his form and fitness. Rohit Sharma also contributed with a brisk 57, and the duo added a 136-run partnership—their second straight 100+ stand after the Sydney ODI earlier this year.
Tension With Gautam Gambhir?
Reports suggest friction between head coach Gautam Gambhir and senior players Kohli & Rohit. After winning the Ranchi ODI Player of the Match, Kohli walked past Gambhir without acknowledgment, sparking discussion. Later, Kohli was seen discussing matters with selector Pragyan Ojha at the airport, who then spoke with Gambhir—adding more fuel to rumours.
Mandatory Domestic Cricket Rule
The BCCI’s updated rule requires senior players to participate in domestic tournaments. Kohli and Rohit earlier complied by playing Ranji Trophy matches. Kohli will represent Delhi in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, though the exact number of matches he will play is yet to be confirmed.
Delhi’s fixtures include:
