Sonam Wangchuk Discharged After 26-Day Hunger Strike
Renowned environmentalist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk was discharged from Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Sunday after spending nearly a week under medical supervision following health complications caused by his prolonged 26-day hunger strike.

According to the hospital’s official medical bulletin, Wangchuk, who was admitted on July 21, 2026, received multidisciplinary treatment under the guidance of specialists in Internal Medicine and Critical Care. Doctors confirmed that his condition is now stable, all vital parameters are normal, and he has been advised to return for regular outpatient follow-ups.

Soon after his discharge, Wangchuk shared an emotional video message expressing gratitude to the doctors and staff who cared for him during his recovery.
“Finally, I am being discharged from the hospital. I will first visit Rajghat to pay my respects to Mahatma Gandhi and then return to the mountains. My heartfelt thanks to everyone, especially the doctors and the entire staff at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram,” Wangchuk said.
The environmental activist had led the student movement at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, demanding the resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET-UG paper leak controversy. His 26-day hunger strike attracted nationwide attention after his health deteriorated significantly.
During the fast, Wangchuk reportedly lost more than 10 kilograms, prompting doctors to admit him for urgent medical care.
The hunger strike was eventually withdrawn following positive discussions between representatives of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and the Central Government. Subsequently, Dharmendra Pradhan resigned from the Union Cabinet, and the government appointed senior BJP leader Pralhad Joshi as the new Union Education Minister.
With his health now improving, Wangchuk is expected to visit Rajghat before returning to his home in Ladakh, marking the end of a movement that sparked national debate over education reforms and accountability.
