Once implemented, international travellers departing from Pune will no longer have to undergo lengthy immigration and customs procedures at major hub airports such as Delhi or Mumbai. Instead, after arriving at the hub airport, passengers will only need to complete security screening before boarding their international flight, significantly reducing transit time.
A senior delegation from the Ministry of Civil Aviation recently conducted an on-site inspection at Pune Airport to assess the infrastructure and operational readiness required for the new system.
The high-level review meeting was attended by officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Airports Authority of India (AAI), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Immigration Department, Customs Department and representatives of various airlines. Discussions focused on operational procedures, passenger convenience, security protocols and the technical upgrades required for implementing the Hub and Spoke model.
Following the meeting, the delegation inspected passenger processing areas, terminal facilities and security infrastructure to evaluate the airport’s preparedness for handling international pre-clearance operations.
The proposed system is expected to provide major benefits to travellers from Pune and Western Maharashtra, a region that records a significant number of international passengers every year.
With immigration and customs formalities completed at Pune Airport itself, passengers will be able to transfer seamlessly through major international hubs without waiting in long queues, making connecting flights faster and more convenient.
The initiative is also expected to enhance Pune Airport’s operational capacity and pave the way for additional international routes and improved global connectivity in the coming years.
Pune Airport Director Santosh Dhoke said that officials from the Ministry and all concerned departments have completed a detailed review of the proposed system and inspected the required infrastructure. He added that the Hub and Spoke model is expected to be implemented soon, bringing smoother international travel for passengers from Pune.
