After a two-week pause, the southwest monsoon has resumed its advance, entering Pune and surrounding regions, with Mumbai and more parts of Maharashtra likely to be covered within 48 hours.
Monsoon Finally Reaches Pune, Mumbai Next in Line
After remaining stalled for nearly two weeks, the southwest monsoon has finally resumed its northward advance and officially reached Pune, bringing much-needed relief to residents waiting for seasonal rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that monsoon winds have advanced into Pune, Alibag and Solapur, while conditions remain highly favourable for further progress across Maharashtra over the next 48 hours.
This year’s monsoon arrived in India later than usual, making landfall in Kerala on June 4, three days behind its normal schedule. The monsoon then advanced rapidly and reached parts of the Konkan coast by June 7. However, its progress slowed significantly afterward, resulting in an unusual pause that lasted for more than two weeks.

Due to this delay, the monsoon failed to meet its traditional timeline of covering large parts of Maharashtra by June 10. As a result, Pune and several other regions continued to experience summer-like heat well into June, with residents anxiously awaiting rainfall.
On Sunday, Pune witnessed its first significant spell of rain this month, with the NDA area recording more than 80 mm of rainfall. However, weather experts clarified that the rainfall was pre-monsoon in nature and not directly linked to the official onset of monsoon conditions.
According to the IMD, the northern limit of the monsoon currently passes through Pune, Alibag, Nizamabad, Dantewada, Sundargarh, Gaya and Muzaffarpur. Meteorologists have stated that atmospheric conditions are now favourable for further advancement of monsoon winds.
As a result, Mumbai, the remaining parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, parts of Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Jharkhand are expected to come under monsoon influence within the next two days.
Heavy Rain Alert Till June 28
The weather department has also issued a warning for widespread rainfall activity across Konkan, Goa and Madhya Maharashtra until June 28. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph and intense rain spells are likely during this period.
Authorities have indicated that isolated locations could witness heavy to very heavy rainfall, prompting residents to remain alert, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
Official Statement
“The monsoon has advanced up to Pune, Alibag and Solapur. Conditions are favourable for further advancement, and Mumbai along with more parts of Maharashtra may come under monsoon coverage within the next 48 hours,” said S. D. Sanap, Scientist, Pune Observatory, India Meteorological Department.
