Pune Viral Fever Cases Surge; PMC Issues Health Alert

Pune: A sharp rise in viral fever and seasonal illnesses has put Pune’s healthcare system on alert, with hospitals witnessing a significant increase in patients suffering from fever, cough, cold and other infectious diseases. Changing weather conditions, combined with humidity, pollution and contaminated water, have contributed to the spread of viral infections across the city.

Both government and private hospitals are reporting a surge in outpatient visits, with long queues forming outside OPDs as residents seek medical treatment. Children, adults and senior citizens are among those most affected, raising concerns over the growing burden of seasonal illnesses.

According to health officials, contaminated drinking water, increased humidity and deteriorating air quality are accelerating the spread of viral diseases. Apart from affecting people’s daily routine, the increasing number of infections is also adding to household medical expenses.

In response to the rising cases, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has placed its Health Department on high alert. Medical examination and free medicine distribution have been strengthened across civic health centres. Preventive measures, including anti-mosquito fogging and insecticide spraying, have also been intensified to reduce the risk of dengue and chikungunya.

The civic body is simultaneously monitoring the quality of drinking water by collecting water samples and has directed officials to strengthen sanitation measures in vulnerable areas.

Health authorities have urged citizens not to self-medicate if symptoms appear. Instead, people are advised to consult qualified doctors immediately, avoid consuming uncovered street food, drink boiled and cooled water, and ensure that stagnant water does not accumulate around their homes.

Officials have further advised residents experiencing persistent fever, severe cough or worsening symptoms to visit the nearest civic health centre without delay. The administration has assured that it is closely monitoring the situation and has appealed to citizens to remain cautious rather than panic.

• High fever accompanied by chills or severe body ache.
• Joint pain, headache or pain behind the eyes.
• Red rashes appearing on the body.
• Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea.
• Seek immediate medical attention instead of relying on home remedies if symptoms worsen.
