A businessman allegedly took away a ₹56 lakh Toyota Fortuner kept in a cooperative bank’s custody without permission, prompting Nigdi police to register a case of cheating and theft.

Chinchwad: Nigdi police have registered a case of cheating and theft against a businessman for allegedly taking away a Toyota Fortuner worth around ₹56 lakh that was under the custody of Shri Gajanan Lokseva Cooperative Bank Ltd at Thermax Chowk, Sambhajinagar, Chinchwad.

The complaint was lodged by Sanjay Vasudev Joshi (67), a resident of Warje, Pune. Based on his complaint, Nigdi police registered Crime No. 520/2026 against Hasmukh Rajaram Bhati (35), a resident of Manikbaug, Pune, under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
According to police, the accused’s wife, Pinky Hasmukh Bhati, had availed a vehicle loan of ₹42 lakh from Shri Gajanan Lokseva Cooperative Bank for purchasing the Toyota Fortuner. During verification, the bank allegedly found that the residential and commercial properties submitted as collateral were not in her name.
Following the discrepancy, the Fortuner vehicle was taken into custody and later handed over to the bank through the assistance of the Sinhagad police.
Police said that on June 26, 2025, at around 1:30 PM, the accused allegedly took away the Toyota Fortuner (MH-12-XX-5929) from outside the bank premises without permission. The complaint alleges that the vehicle was removed by misleading bank officials and with dishonest intent.
Nigdi police have launched an investigation to determine how the accused regained possession of the vehicle and to trace its current location. Further legal action is underway.
